OLD BUSINESS

1. Goals Review

A. Expand student participation and involvement in prevention activities
B. Develop parent and community involvement in substance and violence abuse awareness and responsibility
C. Provide teacher training for substance and violence abuse awareness and implementation of substance/violence abuse curriculum
D. Provide curriculum materials for grades K-8 early prevention
E. Annually disseminate substance and violence abuse/prevention policy

2. 2004 - 2005 Focus Areas - We reviewed the goals and discussed the need to continue these goal areas:

A. Continue Strategic Asset-Building and CHARACTER COUNTS!SM Initiatives

B. Utilize the current data (i.e. Spring 2002-03-04 Character Survey/Bully Results) to help focus new and experienced Wellness Council Members on current goals

C. Continue Intergovernmental Committee - "Youth Master Plan" (Leadership and Involvement)

COMMUNITY SHARING

 

A. Village of Woodridge - Bill Murphy:

The Quality Community Task Force has reconvened to evaluate areas of Police, Housing / Codes, Youth, Senior Citizens, and Diversity. The "Town Meeting" is scheduled for tonight (9/30).

B. Woodridge Park District - Don Ritter: Three items -

1) Make a Difference Day (10/23) - Busses will take youth around the community to clean yards
2) On August 28, officer Bean organized a "3 on 3" basketball tournament at the Janes Avenue Park - 18 teams for approx. 65 players. This was part of the volunteer "Agents of Change" service project.
3) The Park District Community Center renovations should be complete by June 2005. The administrative offices will be moved to the renovated building.
C. Woodridge District 68 - School reports:
1) Goodrich -Brenda Hall - Goodrich's summer character committee planned a schedule of events for every month and every Friday (resources, classroom projects, community projects)
2) Jefferson - Jill Marten - Thank you for a successful 2004 Back to School Bash (B2SB) - in spite of the rain! Clubs and intramurals have begun.
3) Sipley - Cyndi Sanders - Sipley maintains bulletin boards of relatives, friends, and neighbors in Iraq. They collected toys to send to the Iraqi children.
4) Murphy - Lisa David - Wild Cat Wonders - Behavior themes
5) Edgewood - Leslie Marszalek -Concentrating on homework responsibilities
6) Meadowview - Katie Cornelius - The first day of school parade had CHARACTER COUNTS! (CC!) and 35th anniversary themes. They encouraged everyone to say hello in a different language.
D. Community School District 99 - Gretchen Sauer:
1) They had lots of turnover with 50 new staff and a new principal at Downers Grove North High. DG North's homecoming is Oct. 2-3, South's is Oct. 9-10.
2) Freshmen were transitioned in by upperclassmen with phone calls over the summer and activities - Link Crew (DGN)/Rush Corps (DGS) The "culture of high school" was discussed as well as events like dances, swimming, Mustang Mad Dash, keynote speakers, etc. They survey their transfer students and assign peer, and adult mentors to provide a smooth transition.
3) The Key Club helps the Kiwanis (via intergovernmental events) with the Forest Walk, Autumn Fest, and Peanut Sale.
E. Center Cass District 66 - Andrea Conley, Lakeview Junior High:
1) They provide "Treats for Troops" - 900 lbs this summer through www.anysoldier.us for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
2) 80 af their 350 students belong to their CC! Club. They prepare and present CC! skits to the two elementary schools in the district.
3) Their Lakeview 8th graders took the IIL Youth Survey and discovered their students reported the lowest percentage of "experimentation" (drugs, smoking) in IL.
4) They will send students to the IDEA Conference in Springfield this 3rd weekend in November.
5) HomeBase Class - They have put more CC! themes and activities into this homeroom class at the JH where the adult student ratio is 1:15 so they can have more personalized attention. Friday, Oct. 1, 8th graders at Lakeview will spend the entire day on cooperative group activities outside on CC! themes.
F. St. Scholastica School - Lee Pistilli:
1) Staff attended the Dr. Matt Davidson workshop this summer "Pathways to Excel in Ethics". This workshop has prompted to change their detention procedure.
2) Their participation in "We Have the Heart to Change the World" has prompted them to assist in Russia and Florida (hurricane victims).
3) They are sending junior high students to the "CHARACTER COUNTS! College" (C3) October 7 at North Central College. One of their students has the honor of introducing Miss Teen IL at the event. 4) They have included all students successfully working with adults in defining and displaying "My Job, Your Job, Our Job" activities/rules.
G. Community Resource Center - Steve Herron:
1) The "Youth Master Plan" is complete and they are working on more high school involvement.
2) The summer program had 60-70 kids
3) The current after school program has over 100 kids and a waiting list. So, they are looking into alternative sites to host their programs…perhaps partnering with Murphy School.
4) They are writing a community block grant.
H. D.A.R.E. - Steve Herron:
1) Cindy Mammoser is on leave from DARE to finish a college degree and Darleen Thomas is on leave expecting her first child - Congratulations to both!
2) One full time (Frank Jackowiak) and three part-time Scott Webb, Jeff Bean, and Mike Carpenter) DARE certified officers are assigned currently to DARE. Goodrich, Meadowview, and Willow Creek have the part-time officers.
I. Police Department -
1) Kevin Lindblom is the Crime Prevention Officer.
2) The Woodridge Police Department includes two officers that have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
3) Agents for Change (see item B.2. above) also hosted a "Double Dutch" contest. 115 participants were treated to hot dogs and took a youth survey.
4) As part of the Quality Community Task Force recommendations, they are emphasizing education / marketing the police department. The Community Police have become Crime prevention (Officer Kevin Lindblom). They will identify resources for appropriate use in the community.
5) The Woodridge Police Department has been working on Preparedness/Readiness to practice "rapid deployment" since 2000.
6) Call Steve Herron if you have any need for police services/topics. He will send the appropriate staff.
J. Breaking Free - Shari Johnson:
1) They can come in and make interactive presentations at the K-College levels. Contact Shari Johnson (630) 355-2585
2) They are concentrating in rural West Chicago, Aurora, and Kane County on correcting students' misperceptions with "Social Norms and Marketing Campaigns".
K. Metro DuPage Family Services - Rebecca Hamilton:
1) There is now a waiting list for their Individual/Family Counseling
2) They are writing a grant for an additional bilingual therapist
3) This year they presented at the Junior Curriculum night on the topic "Who's in Control" - how to discipline children
4) They have assigned two interns to Jefferson Junior High this year
L. Parents as Teachers Program - Pat Nugent/Lauren Imboden:
1) They serve children in the Woodridge 68 attendance area ages 0-5. Anyone can make a referral. All children are welcome. Call Pat (630) 784-4978. They have both English and bilingual programs. They do early intervention (physical therapy, speech) and parenting classes.
2) The high school Key Club helps with Family Nights (dinner, childcare, and crafts w/ kids, speaker)
M.Church Faith Community - Jennifer Michalik:
1) St. Scholastica offers Freshmen - Senior group activities like Chicago Street Ministries - handing out lunches, Ecumenical Thanksgiving service (11/21/04), summer mission trips, trip to Germany next year for World Youth Day.
2) The Junior High has an after school drop-in on the first Thursday of every month
3) There are Jr/Sr high activities - hayride, bowling lock-in, retreat, homeless sleep-out (work with Daybreak Transitional Housing)
4) Two defibrillators have been donated with training by the fire department to all faculty
N.Girl Scouts of DuPage -

The Girl Scout troop at the Community Resource Center is scheduled to begin November 5th.

O. Woodridge Rotary - Steve Herron:

1) Sponsored a Triathlon in August - 144 participants ages 10-70+
2) Their annual plant sale is coming up (poinsettias and cacti)
3) They are looking for 2 high school students for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Retreat in November
P. Downers Grove Township Youth Committee - Andrea Conley:

At Lakeview Junior High they lead the Junior High Life Skills Program for grades 6-8 health classes (bullying, friendship, self esteem), 7th grade resistance skills, 8th grade shoplifting/laws/high school transitions
