OLD BUSINESS
2004 - 2005 Focus Areas Review – The Council discussed the three focus areas and felt they should continue until decisions are reached through a “ Rejuvenation Workshop” in the fall of 2005. At that point, we’d like to analyze three areas, based on current data and needs: Mission Statement, Goals, and future Focus Areas.
  1. Continue Strategic Asset-Building and CHARACTER COUNTS! SM Initiatives
  2. Utilize the current data (i.e. Spring 2002-03-04 Character Survey/Bully Results) to help focus new and experienced Wellness Council Members on current goals
  3. Continue Intergovernmental Committee – “Youth Master Plan” (Leadership and Involvement)

NEW BUSINESS

1. Review of DARE Program/Support for Continuance - DARE Surveys will be distributed in spring 2005. Our local surveys in previous years have shown a positive response to the “expanded” DARE program. Depending on positive 2005 survey results, the Safe and Drug-free Schools Grant (Title IV) Application can continue the DARE program through 2005-2006.

NOTE: The DARE program in Woodridge is funded through collaboration of the Woodridge School District, the Village of Woodridge, and the Woodridge Police Department

The Council members discussed the added benefits of the good relationships formed between the DARE officers and the students. PE teachers report positive student feedback at the junior high. The DARE program can be effective if put into a community program. The School Board reports that they haven’t found a better program yet to replace DARE, but would be open to ideas. Shari Johnson from Breaking Free [Naperville Office – (630) 355-2585] offered to supply alternative programs for the Village and District to consider.

The Council decided to endorse / approve DARE for FY 2005-2006, based on it’s enhanced delivery plan in the Woodridge schools and positive survey results.

2. (2:00) Parent Program Report “Pause for Me” – Robyne Lewis, Principal, Sipley School Robyne Lewis shared the new parent pilot, “Pause for Me” that their school’ STP (PTO) and faculty are adapting, from the Indiana program “3 for Me”, for fall 2005. Participation with recognition is a key factor (vs. volunteering). They plan to roll the program out to parents at the Sipley Curriculum Night on September 8, 2005.

Robyne shared highlights from “Rewards of Participation,” an article in the March 2005 Educational Leadership journal. A full description of the Sipley program can be found on page 3 of the bi-monthly Woodridge 68 newsletter, Spirit of 68 – April/May 2005 issue.

Robyne also shared that Sipley used District funds for a 12-week after-school Spanish Class (Thursdays from 3-4:30) for educators sponsored by the College of DuPage Business Professional Development Department. 20-person minimum. This included materials, CDs, and a notebook for participants.
