Retirements
On Friday, February 22, 2008 he Lisle-Woodridge Fire District will bid farewell to three of its members who represent 92 years of service to the District.
Deputy Chief Terrence Vavra joined the District as a paid on call firefighter in 1976. In 1979, he became a full time LWFD Firefighter. During DC Vavra’s career he served as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and Bureau Chief of Training, Education and Safety. In 1985 he was honored both as Lisle-Woodridge Fire District Firefighter of the Year and Village of Woodridge Outstanding Employee of the Year. In 2004, he was promoted to Deputy Chief – Administration.
Deputy Chief Vavra earned a Master of Science in Management and Organizational Behavior degree from Benedictine University. He is on the faculty at Benedictine University and the College of Du Page. His love of education led him to institute a degree program for all Lisle-Woodridge Fire District employees and other Public Safety employees to attend Benedictine University.
Deputy Chief Vavra will be sworn in as Chief of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department on March 3, 2008.
Captain Ken McAfee joined the District in September, 1977 as a Fire Medic and was promoted to Lieutenant and Captain. Captain McAfee was an original member of the dive team serving at one time as Coordinator. He was also a member of the Haz Mat team and one of the founders of the Wellness/Fitness program, serving as Coordinator for many years.
Captain Kurt Kuhlmann also started with the Lisle-Woodridge Fire district as a paid on call firefighter in 1978. He was hired as a full time dispatcher, and in 1979, joined the District as a full time Fire Fighter. In 1993, Captain Kuhlman was promoted to Lieutenant and, in 2007, to Captain.
The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District extends their appreciation for the dedication of these men and wishes them well in their retirement.
