Careless Smoking
Recently, the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District experienced a fire loss in the District caused by careless smoking. This situation was made more dangerous by the fact that there were no working smoke detectors in the residence. It was fortunate that the residents were awake and loss of life was, therefore, avoided.
In the interest of life safety, the Lisle Woodridge Fire Protection District wants you to know that careless smoking is one of the leading causes of residential fire deaths. On average, in Illinois, careless smoking is the cause of more than 1,030 fires, 20 deaths, 150 injuries and $8.4 million in property damage each year.
Some tips for avoiding smoking material fires are:
-
NEVER smoke in bed.
-
Use large, deep ashtrays and douse cigarette remains with water BEFORE discarding.
-
Dispose of cigarettes and ashes in metal containers.
-
Check under and around sofa and chair cushions for smoldering cigarettes BEFORE retiring for the night.
-
DON’T BE CARELESS WITH YOUR SMOKING MATERIALS.
