Be Safe: Spring is Coming

The warmer weather is fast approaching. So too is the time of the year when we open the garage and take out our lawn mower, weed trimmers, and other garden tools. Unfortunately, with this renewed use of power equipment, trips to the emergency room increase due to power tool mishaps. The Lisle- Woodridge Fire District wants you to enjoy spring and encourages you to follow the guidelines below to help protect yourself.

1. Read and understand the operations manual for any equipment before you use it.

2. Store gasoline in UL approved containers.

3. Only fuel equipment outdoors away from ignition sources.

4. Operate equipment outdoors as well to avoid build up of carbon monoxide.

5. Check that all safety guards and related equipment is in working order.

6. Make sure that all equipment has sharp blades

7. Shut off all equipment to make any needed adjustments.

8. NEVER reach into the equipment to release trapped debris while the equipment is operating.

9. Check area before mowing to avoid or remove any hazards that can be run over. 1

0. Beware of Children who can be easily injured with power equipment.

Besides lawn care incidents you must also be aware of hazards with outdoor electricity. While raising ladders or digging, look out for power lines and other electrical hazards. Unplug outdoor electrical cords when not in use and replace ones that are fragmented or cut. Be safe during the springtime, summer will be here sooner than you think.

For more information on this or any other fire prevention issue, contact the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Prevention Bureau at 630-353-3030.
