Pool Safety Program
Several years ago, the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection
District began a program of training in pool safety and offered it
to life guards and staff of many of the public pools within the
District boundaries. Prior to that time, similar classes were
offered by the District but only by request. This
program was increased to become readily available to all public pool
staff.
The purpose of this program
was to impart training and experience to those responsible for the safety of
District residents. The pool safety program covers and reviews pool rescue and
follow up procedures. More importantly, it includes handling emergencies, and
what to expect as these scenarios unfold. The program is based on reinforcing
what lifeguards are expected to do prior to the arrival of District emergency
personnel. While lifeguards and other pool personnel are trained yearly, they
do not have the day to day experience of handling emergency incidents.
To be able to combine their training with the emergency experience of fire
fighters and fire medics makes them better prepared and trained to be first
responders in time of an emergency situation. The program also includes a
graphic video and descriptive, first-hand experiences that instills in the pool
staff a reality to the seriousness and possibility of these emergency situations
actually occurring.
This program has been taught
at many different locations throughout the District including Lisle Park
District Sea Lion Pool, Woodridge Park District Cypress Cove and Hobson Pools,
Meadows Subdivision Pool, Four Lakes Villages, Central Park of Lisle Health
Club, Benedictine University, Radisson Hotel of Lisle, Village IV Pool,
Butterfield Pool in Glen Ellyn and Beau Bien Subdivision Pool.
The overall response to this
program from pool personnel and lifeguard has been excellent and the positive
results have been shown through the handling of pool emergencies since the
program’s inception.
