Structure Fire - 5750 Abbey Drive

At 2:22 P.M. on Monday, February 1, 2010 the Lisle Woodridge Fire District was notified by way of activated fire alarm and was dispatched to 5750 Abbey Drive, Lisle. An Automatic Alarm Assignment was immediately dispatched, sending two (2) engines, one (1) ladder truck, one (1) medic unit and a Battalion Chief to the scene.

The first unit arrived on scene at 2:24 P.M. and reported smoke showing with a partial evacuation. Emergency crews immediately upgraded to a General Alarm, requesting additional assistance internally and from surrounding fire departments due to the type of occupancy and the life hazard. In all, there were more than 40 personnel on the scene including more than 30 from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District. Personnel on the scene also included Firefighters from the Downers Grove Fire Department. The Wheaton Fire Department and the Lombard Fire Department provided assistance with their companies changing quarters to cover additional calls in the district during the incident.

Fire Crews immediately identified the fire on the fourth floor and deployed their high rise pack utilizing the building standpipe system. They charged the fire hose and made their way down the hallway toward the fire. Once entry was made to the fire apartment a primary search led the crew to the fire area where the first-in company found a civilian in the smoke-filled environment and they immediately initiated a rescue of the victim. The victim was transferred to the Paramedics for implementation of life-saving techniques. They transported the patient to a local hospital where the patient was pronounced deceased. Emergency Crews also treated and released two other civilians for minor issues at the scene. There were no injuries sustained by firefighting personnel at this incident.

The fire was under control within 15 minutes of the first arriving units and the fire was struck out at approximately 2:45 P.M. Some of the crews remained on the scene performing salvage and overhaul with the final fire crew returning at 4:21 P.M. The fire apartment was secured for investigation purposes and maintenance crews facilitated cleaning of the surrounding areas so the remaining tenants could return to their units. Only the fire apartment was rendered uninhabitable.

The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District and DuPage County Sheriffs Fire Investigators are continuing the investigation of the fire. No further information is available at this time; additional information will be disseminated as it becomes available. If you have further questions, please contact Bureau Chief Jim French at 630.353.3055.
