First Responders In Events Needing Decisions (FRIEND)

This is a basic first aid class taught to 7th and 8th graders within the District. The program has been presented over the past years. The idea behind the class is to show the students how easy it is to provide care while awaiting the arrival of help. Students are instructed in surveying the scene to determine if it safe for them to provide aid. ABC's (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) are critical for patient survival and the students are shown rescue breathing and how to manage an obstructed airway. Students are taught to distinguish between the need for calling for help and when it is not necessary to call for help through examples provided by the instructor. Other emergencies that are covered include strains, sprains and factures, heart attack, stroke, environmental emergencies, burns and bleeding.

The class is taught for five consecutive days for approximately 45 to 50 minutes. The students are given situations to resolve when attending the class and an end of class examination.
